Desktop Suite Manual

Use every public Sentinel application with consistent, recoverable workflows.

The v1.0.18-2 final baseline installs the sentinel-desktop-suite=1.0.0-2 policy metapackage and 22 exact component packages. This manual explains the purpose, first workflow, data-safety practice, package version and launcher for each component.

Application rule: launch graphical tools as the normal desktop user. Use sudo only for package administration or a documented system repair. Program 109 remains pending and is intentionally excluded.

Menus and launchers

Use the SentinelOS menu for normal use. The command reference is provided for diagnostics, scripting and recovery when a desktop entry is missing.

Local-first data

The suite is designed around local records. Cloud services are not required for ordinary application data, although selected network features such as browsing or currency data naturally need connectivity.

Backups

Use each application's export or backup function where available, and also back up the underlying user data before bulk import, migration or repair.

Bridges

Where applications exchange records, grant only the required access. Keep credentials in Password Vault, money records in Ledger and contact identity in Contacts.

Use the suite as connected specialist tools.

Run a small job

Create the customer in Contacts, track the work in Jobs, record parts in Inventory or Maintenance, produce documents in Documents, and record income and expenses in Ledger.

Manage a household asset

Create the asset in Maintenance, track spare parts in Inventory, record purchase documents in Documents and Ledger, and schedule the next service in Calendar.

Handle a download safely

Download through Browser, keep the file in Download Guard quarantine, review the source and checks, then open or import it with the relevant application.

Prepare a trip

Use Notes checklist templates, Calendar events, Pantry or Inventory lists, Documents for bookings, and Password Vault for account credentials.

Build and publish software

Develop in the preferred editor, use F.O.R.G.E for build and packaging, use F.O.R.G.E Crypto for digest verification, test in a disposable environment, then publish through the approved repository process.

Organise local media

Catalogue files in Media Index, correct metadata, play trusted files in Media Player and back up both the catalogue and the actual media library.

Data safety

Back up records before changing packages or performing bulk operations.

Export from the application.
Use JSON, CSV, vCard, PDF or application-specific backup formats where supported.
Close the application.
Avoid copying an active database while it is being written.
Copy local data.
Back up the relevant user data and configuration to independent storage.
Verify the backup.
Generate a SHA-256 record and test a restore or import into a safe location.

Troubleshooting

Separate launcher, package, data and integration faults.

Menu entry missing

Check the package, desktop file and launcher command. Log out and back into MATE after menu or panel package changes.

Command missing

Use apt-cache policy PACKAGE and dpkg-query -L PACKAGE. Repair the package rather than creating an unmanaged replacement command.

Application opens but data is absent

Confirm the signed-in user, data path, import state and permissions. Do not run the graphical app with sudo.

Bridge action fails

Confirm both applications are installed at the locked versions and that the user authorised the specific data exchange.
